“I believe you should come to the gym for yourself and not for anyone else, 30 minutes is all it takes to feel better about yourself and can potentially change the course of your day”

Hugh’s Story:

I have worked as a personal trainer and strength & conditioning coach for a year now with the team at Stronger By Design. I’m super excited to begin this phase of my life and cannot wait to start meeting new people and helping them reach their fitness goals.

First a bit of background for those of you who don’t know me. I’m obsessed with sports and the professionalism side of sports, personally I have played a lot of football through my life, which is where my love for fitness and training came from.

Unfortunately, my football journey didn’t go to plan for me. After requiring major back surgery at the beginning of 2023 due to the diagnosis of a shattered disc and a dislodged L5 vertebrae from my spine. This resulted in myself being forcefully ruled out for two years.

So, after that news began the tedious process of determining what I really wanted to do with myself. Due to my passion for fitness and training, personal training seemed like a great job, and so that brings me to today.

I am very excited to announce I have started a new chapter of my life and I’m super excited to meet all of you and help everyone achieve their goals on and off the field and improve their general health.

Qualifications/key experience

“Strength is the basis of athleticism; movement efficiency is the expression of athleticism. You must consider both sides of the coin”

Joel's Story:

I have worked as a strength and conditioning coach for 5 years now working mostly with athletes from different sporting codes. I have a real passion for all things athletic development and co-managing clients with their rehabilitation protocols. I also have a love for helping general population embed strength training into their lifestyles and pushing them to exceed their own expectations of themselves.

I first started my journey as a coach with an internship at an athlete training facility. This occurred when I finished my exercises science degree after deciding secondary school teaching wasn’t for me. I quickly obtained an employment roll not long after starting my internship where I worked on my craft as a coach and submerged myself with as must knowledge and experiences as possible. Once I felt I had learned enough from my employment I decided to go out on my own where I created Stronger By Design – Training & Performance.

I can honestly say this has been the most rewarding time of my life working with such amazing clients and athletes from all walks of life. I am proud of the culture we have created where everyone can come and be themselves, train hard, and have a laugh in-between. Whilst we are serious about our training and development, I feel like what makes us difference to other strength and conditioning businesses is our genuine care for our members and their happiness in and out of the gym.

One specific passion of mine is educating footballers of all ages on how to better prepare for their sport. After playing football myself for many years locally and battling injuries due to poor training methods growing up, my goal is to provide a service that I wish I had been exposed to when I was younger. By educating and coaching local footballers with the correct methodologies and systems, I hope to assist them to perform at their highest ability and for a longer lasting career.

With that being said, we have obtained some amazing athletic and fitness results for our members who range from your average joe, weekend warrior, through to the AFL stage and even group 1 horse racing. But all have shared one thing in common and that is a solid relationship and enjoyment along the way.

I am very excited for what’s to come as we imbed our reputation in Melbourne’s west as the one stop shop for athlete development and more specifically both men and women football players.

“Empowering you to be stronger than your strongest excuse”

Abdul's Story:

I’m currently in my final year of an Exercise Science degree (Sports Practice) and have 3 years of experience as a fitness coach. In addition to my academic background, I work as a personal trainer at another gym, where I’ve had the privilege of guiding a wide variety of clients on their fitness journeys. Whether it’s helping the general population lose fat, build muscle, or simply improve their overall health, I’ve consistently provided tailored programs to meet each client’s unique needs and goals.

Beyond general fitness coaching, I also specialize in working with athletes. At the football club where I play, I’ve gained hands-on experience with performance enhancement and injury prevention strategies. In 2021, I encountered a personal setback when I suffered an ACL rupture, which took me out of the 2022 season. This challenging experience provided me with invaluable insight into the physical and mental aspects of injury rehabilitation. It has greatly influenced how I approach injury recovery for my clients, ensuring they rebuild strength and confidence in the safest and most effective way possible.

I pride myself on being able to work with both the general population and athletes alike, providing personalized training that fits each individual’s specific needs. Whether you’re someone looking to lose fat and improve your health or an athlete striving to elevate your performance, I’m here to offer the guidance, support, and expertise necessary to help you break through barriers and achieve lasting results.
